Nonvolatile RamDisk Appliances

DRAM based solid state storage has been around for a number of years. By combining DRAM memory, hard drives, and batteries, you can build non-volatile, high speed storage in an external storage appliance.  A number of companies build these.  Unfortunately, these offerings are complicated to build and end up being very expensive.

EasyCo's MFT forms the basis for an alternate solution.  Much of the cost and complexity of DRAM SSDs lies in getting the data from memory back to the hard drives so that data is not lost on a power failure or appliance hang.  EasyCo approaches this problem completely differently.  For read operations, we read your data directly from RAM with near zero latency.  For writes, we write to a high bandwidth RAID array of hard drives.  This yields internal read rates of >200,000 4K IOPS, and write rates of up to 75,000 4K IOPS in a 1u form-factor.

There are several things that make our solution more appealing older DRAM SSDs.

First, your data is stored first-in-first-out (FIFO) on raid protected hard disks within 0.6 seconds of your application writing it.  There are no batteries to fail or wear out. There are no delays to flush data before the system can be restarted. The system can be hard powered off and it will not lose data.

Second, you can save a lot of money.  EasyCo's MFT DRAM Appliances are standard, server-class, x86 Linux servers with standard FB-DDR2 memory and iSCSI network controllers.  This lets you add RAM and SAN interface adapters to a bare server at "market pricing", saving you a lot of money.  If you calculate the cost/GB of storage, you will see savings as high as 70%.

Third, our MFT DRAM Appliances are also dense (64GB in 1U) saving you data center space.

Fourth, our MFT DRAM Appliances do not require special maintenance. They are built with standard components from reputable manufacturers such as SuperMicro and are easily repaired or replaced without special maintenance contracts. Similarly, they are modular in concept and sparing, for time-critical operations, is very low cost.

Usable Space and Overcommits

The usable Ram space of this device is approximately 1/2 gigabyte less than the gross space. Of this, approximately 300 megabytes is needed for Linux, and a further 50 megabytes per 32 gigabytes is needed to power the MFT solution.

It is similarly possible to over-commit these devices, making the ram-disk "bigger" than it naturally is. Minimally, if your volumes always have a certain percentage of empty space, you can increase the volume size by this percentage. You can similarly increase the volume size by that proportion that is almost never used, and thus is only occasionally read. Doing the former requires nothing but a mathematics calculation. The latter must be done with care as misapplication could lead to an effectively slower system.
