Why Managed Flash Technology
Dramatically Improves Flash Performance
Flash memory is a wonderful invention. It can randomly access data at extremely high speeds. But it has a problem: when this data needs to be written back, the random write speed is often only 1/500th of the random read speed. As a result, flash drives by themselves only perform a little better than some hard drives, and a little worse than others.
What we have developed is a new methodology which enables random writes at speeds that actually exceed random read performance. We do this by always writing linearly and then remembering where we wrote each block of data. This writing method creates an environment where writes normally occur at a rate significantly faster than random reads, and with significantly less wear to the drive.
In the following pages, we will try to explain both the problem in greater detail, as well as why our solution works as well as it does.
