Looking for a 300,000rpm Disk Drive?
Managed Flash Technology Fixes The
Random Write Problem of Flash Drives
Flash disk drives are a wonderful invention. At 5,400 four-kilobyte random reads per second, a quality flash drive random reads more than twenty-five times faster than the fastest hard disk drive.
But flash disk drives also have a significant random-write problem. In standard flash drives, random write speeds range from about 13 blocks a second to about 40 per second. A 15,000 rpm hard drive with a random write rate of 200 typically beats this by a factor of between five and fifteen.
Practically, ordinary flash drives are only a little faster than disk drives. Traditional hard drives random read and write between 70 and 200 I/Os per second depending upon spindle speed. At a 10% random write level, flash drives perform typically in a range between 128 to 194 I/Os a second. Thus, flash drives in a native environment will tend to perform better than laptop drives with their very slow spindle speeds, but worse than the hard disks used in PCs and servers.
Managed Flash Technology (patent pending) can increase random write speeds up to 700 times. The sustained write rate of MFT is typically almost 10,000 four-kilobyte random writes a second. MFT in a 10% random write environment will increase the average I/O rate to close to 5,700 I/Os a second on an SSD with a random read rate of 5,400 reads/sec. MFT can increase the average random I/O performance of flash disks by 10 to 50 fold depending upon use conditions and drive design.
